My first sourdough starter was named Nellie. Nellie as in Little House On The Prairie Nellie Olsen Nellie. Nellie because she was difficult, ornery, whiny, and just a general pain in the buttinski.

It wasn’t her fault she was that way – I raised her in a “stainless steel” environment. “Stainless steel” in brackets cuz it ain’t the real thing. Nope, this is local stainless steel, the stuff that stains, rusts, chips, flakes, discolours, and generally isn’t that good of quality. And, when used to raise a sourdough, can react with the acid in the said sourdough and leach metals and other nasty stuff into the sourdough. Hence Nellie’s demise.

Then came Sam (as in Sourdough Sam or Sam Carter), or Sammy (think Supernatural), or… Well, you know, I’ve just got an odd sense of humour, so we’ll leave it at that. 🙂

In the last couple of weeks, Sammy’s escaped his fermentation chamber (a plastic water buffalo curd container) four times. Now, he ordinarily burps (produces enough gas that the lid comes off on one side), and I’m fine with that behavior. But trying to escape? The nerve!

Today, it was so bad that the lid was all the way dislodged and starting to float away, along with Sammy.

Now I’m beginning to wonder if I need to rename him. Serious deliberations are involved. But I need your help.

What do you think would be the best new name for Sammy?
