Naan (Flat Bread)

We sure do seem to go through a lot of flat breads in this house. Sometimes, it’s to go with Middle Eastern food, sometimes Indian or Sri Lankan, sometimes Mexican. I have a few different types of flat breads I make, depending on what else I’m making, and this is one of my favourites....

Food Safari 2 – another video

27 March 2011

Here’s another video on Sri Lankan cooking which starts out with string hoppers. Charmaine Solomon, the woman in the first half of the video uses a wildly different amount of ingredients in her curries than I’ve seen in other Sri Lankan curries. Again, it comes down to variations in ethnicity and region, I believe,...

Sri Lankan Cuisine – a video

26 March 2011

This video is thirteen minutes long and a great introduction into Sri Lankan cooking. One thing you should know – not everyone in Sri Lanka uses that many curry leaves in their cooking. It’s my understanding that it’s pretty common in Jaffna cuisine (Jaffna is a predominantly Tamil area in the north of the...

Well, to be honest, I didn't realize at first that Fahim's mom intended the chickpeas to be for breakfast. ......

Kiri Aluwa – Sri Lankan Milk Toffee

Except that Fahim tells me that no one calls it kiri aluwa, apparently. Ah well. ๐Ÿ™‚ This is a sweet that I encountered very soon after I came here. And as usual with most sweets, I adore it. ๐Ÿ™‚ In the past, we’ve bought it from the grocery store. Milk toffee usually comes in...

Anguna Kola Sambol

An old-ish man in our neighborhood does occasional yard work for us. Today, he stopped by to see if we had any work for him, so Fahim got him to clean up the ditch in front of the next-door property since they’re blocked with a foot-deep amount of mud, plant matter, and other refuse,...

Capsicum and Pickled Lime by Mama Farook

This is one of the recipes that Fahim’s mom taught me. I loved it so much that, when my sister and her family were visiting, I made it for them. My sister fell in love with it, too. ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s not your usual North American fare, but it’s so delightful it’s worth giving it...

Eating Ginger Leaves? Thebu!

A little over a year ago, when our house helper lady came to work, she brought us some stalks of thebu. She does this sometimes – brings edible vegetation. Miscellaneous leaves or stalks of this or that. I don’t mind – I’m up for the adventure. ๐Ÿ™‚ The thebu she brought is Costus speciosus....

About LMAshton

Howdy and welcome to my site! I'm Laurie and I'll be your, er, hostess today. :)

I'm a Canadian expat currently living in Singapore. I'm married to a Sri Lankan and lived in Sri Lanka for nearly a decade. We also lived in New Zealand for half a year.

I cook Sri Lankan curries, sambols, and mallungs. I bake bread using wild yeast (sourdough that isn't sour). I bake on the stove. I experiment with Indian / Malaysian / Indonesian / Thai / whatever cuisines interest me. And I experiment wildly.

Life is an adventure. Join me! :)
