Sri Lankan Cuisine – a video

26 March 2011
By

This video is thirteen minutes long and a great introduction into Sri Lankan cooking. One thing you should know – not everyone in Sri Lanka uses that many curry leaves in their cooking. It’s my understanding that it’s pretty common in Jaffna cuisine (Jaffna is a predominantly Tamil area in the north of the...

When Fahim’s parents come for a visit, they sometimes bring things with them, usually food items of one description or another. It might be sweets like muscat or jellabies, or fruit from their trees like mango or papaya. Sometimes, it’s green chillies or other vegetables. This last visit? Awara. Awara look a bit like...

Spicy Mustard Chicken Curry

A month and a half back, Fahim and I were returning home when we saw this truck. ... Cuz I really don't think we're in an alternate universe right now, you know? As it turns out, we got our answer when the car we were in passed the truck.

Capsicum and Pickled Lime by Mama Farook

This is one of the recipes that Fahim’s mom taught me. I loved it so much that, when my sister and her family were visiting, I made it for them. My sister fell in love with it, too. 🙂 It’s not your usual North American fare, but it’s so delightful it’s worth giving it...

Lunch on Eid ul-Fitr

We opted to get outside food this Eid. It’s so much less work and so much less tiring. Unfortunately, it’s not quite as good as homemade. We ordered the mutton biryani package from Miami Catering. The mutton biryani came with six hard-boiled eggs and 1 kg mutton (minimum! they say). It also came with...

Breakfast on Eid ul-Fitr

Eid ul-Fitr is the day marking the end of Ramadan for Muslims. Eid is one of the most important days for Muslims, similar to Christmas for Christians. Breakfast isn’t eaten until the men return from the mosque for festival prayers at around 8:30 am. Today was a fairly typical breakfast for Eid ul-Fitr or...

Mama Farook’s Sri Lankan Chilli Potatoes

Because it’s Ramadan, and it’s difficult for Fahim to eat a full meal when breakfast has to be done by 4:30am, enough to carry him through the next 14 hours until he can eat again, he gets to make requests. At the beginning of Ramadan, Fahim had asked for his mother’s chilli potatoes. While...

Capsicum Curried in Coconut Milk

I’ve made this dish before for Fahim and I, and we really like it. Then, one day, his parents were here and I made it again, and they agreed that it was good and said I could make it again. For them, that’s high praise! The original recipe is from Ceylon Cooking by Chandra...

Tempered Okra Curry

Tempered Okra Curry

Okra is called ladies fingers in English in Sri Lanka or bandakka in Sinhala. I’m used to calling it okra, so that’s what I’ll go with. 🙂 One of Fahim’s cousin, knowing that I’m interested in cooking Sri Lankan food, gave me a Sri Lankan cookbook a year or so back. It’s called Ceylon...

About LMAshton

Howdy and welcome to my site! I'm Laurie and I'll be your, er, hostess today. :)

I'm a Canadian expat currently living in Singapore. I'm married to a Sri Lankan and lived in Sri Lanka for nearly a decade. We also lived in New Zealand for half a year.

I cook Sri Lankan curries, sambols, and mallungs. I bake bread using wild yeast (sourdough that isn't sour). I bake on the stove. I experiment with Indian / Malaysian / Indonesian / Thai / whatever cuisines interest me. And I experiment wildly.

Life is an adventure. Join me! :)
