Running Out of Rice At the Beginning of Holiday Season…

Is a very very bad thing when you live in a rice & curry household. I live in such a household.

How did it happen? Well…

I’m pretty anal about things. As soon as I open a bag of rice (or a packet of red chilli pepper powder, or Maldive fish flakes, or laundry detergent, or…), I write it on my ongoing grocery shopping list. I have a lousy memory. I’ve accepted this a long, long time ago, and I find ways to deal with it. This is how I deal with it. 🙂

But it didn’t happen this time.

I can only surmise that, the last time my casual house helper lady person, Girlie (yes, that’s really her name) was here, the rice must have been low and she opened the bag. And, not knowing my routine, she didn’t say anything to me. Not her fault. Just the way life happens.

Under normal circumstances, this isn’t necessarily a problem. But…

Tomorrow is a Poya Day. Friday is Good Friday. Sunday is Easter. Monday is Tamil/Sinhala New Years Eve. Tuesday is Tamil/Sinhala New Years. All of which are holidays.

And all of which means that most shops will be closed.

Fahim tells me that Arpico will still be open, but for crying out loud, we just went grocery shopping! This morning! And got back ten minutes before I discovered our internal rice shortage! And it costs money to go there!

If it was a real emergency, Fahim would go and get a bag of rice, but it turns out that, between the pasta, potatoes, bag of basmati rice I’ve been saving, and a tad of red rice we’ve got kicking around, we’ll probably be fine until next Wednesday when business sort of resumes. Because, honestly, in a holiday situation like this, a lot of people have taken all of this week and next off. And with the economy, businesses are shutting down for the two weeks to save on labour costs.

All of which means… *sigh* Why do I get myself into these messes? 😉

  3. Yep, too bad you’re over there and we’re over here. I too have rice I’d share. White rice or brown rice, take your pick. But, yeah, realizing you’re out of anything, moments after returning from the store is not fun.
