I have a morning routine. It starts with me putting a pot of water on to boil, and when it’s boiling, I make tea for Fahim, cereal for Fahim (because his is milk based – mine is yoghurt based), making jugs of drinks for both of us to remain hydrated, and so on.

After I’m done making breakfast, I then put a pot of water on to boil. Because, you know, we have to boil water before we can drink it.

I do this, and then I turn on the gas.

And the flames lick my arm! Four inches further away from where the flame has ever reached before!

I scream!

Because, of course, I scream whenever I see geckos or, well, other things that surprise or startle me. And that happens to include flames that melt my arm hair.

Fahim’s comment – after he came to the kitchen to see if I needed rescuing, the darling knight in shining armor that he is – is that it’s probably because there’s more gas left in the tank than we thought and turning it upside down has resulted in an increase in pressure.

Um, ‘kay.

Why couldn’t you warn me?

  1. Yeah, considering what’s been going on here, that’s just a bit too skeery for me. Gah.

Howdy and welcome to my site! I'm Laurie and I'll be your, er, hostess today. :)

I'm a Canadian expat currently living in Singapore. I'm married to a Sri Lankan and lived in Sri Lanka for nearly a decade. We also lived in New Zealand for half a year.

I cook Sri Lankan curries, sambols, and mallungs. I bake bread using wild yeast (sourdough that isn't sour). I bake on the stove. I experiment with Indian / Malaysian / Indonesian / Thai / whatever cuisines interest me. And I experiment wildly.
