Things are looking a bit rough around the edges…

Howdy! Long story short, I just moved my food blog here from another domain and I’m still working on tweaking the theme and whatnot, so things aren’t looking exactly like I want them to. It’ll take a bit of time. But the content’s all here, so feel free to explore and have fun and...

Stone Apples

I bet a lot of you are scratching your heads at this one. Stone apples? What? I bet some of you are thinking that I made it up. Stone apples don’t really exist. But you know what? They do. They really really do. And I had one. Or, um, parts of one. My mother...

Starfruit

Our neighbor has a starfruit plant. Tree? Bush? Tree, I think. Many of the branches hang over into our yard, and I get to watch the starfruit grow. πŸ™‚ And then, when the starfruit is ripe, I get to pick it. And eat it. πŸ™‚ Happiness. πŸ™‚

Bread Trishaw!

We have a neighborhood bread trishaw. We also have neighborhood ice cream trishaws. πŸ™‚ This bread trishaw goes through our neighborhood, and others, playing an annoying tune that everyone recognizes as belonging to the bread trishaw. Those who want to buy bread run out to the road with rupees in hand and buy… whatever....

Everything you ever needed to know about coconut scrapers

Well, mostly, anyway. πŸ™‚ Being a Canadian, I didn’t know that coconut scrapers were called coconut scrapers – I would have called them shredders or something else, but coconut scraper it is, at least in this part of the world. πŸ™‚ After all, how many coconuts did I ever buy when I lived in...

Cooking with propane burners…

I’ve mentioned before that not everyone here owns a proper stove with oven. It’s quite common for people to use propane burners like these. Although not everyone can afford this much. We have one neighbor, an old woman, who lives down our road and comes to the abandoned lot next to our house every...

Cooking Gas On Wheels…

This big truck is transporting gas cylinders for Shell. The gas cylinders are used for cooking either with gas stoves like I have (4 gas burners plus an oven with a broiler) or with what those from the US and Canada would think of as camping stoves with one to three burners, although they...

De-husking and wacking open a coconut

29 November 2009
By

My mother-in-law kindly showed her coconut de-husking and wacking-open skills for me while I recorder her doing it. She’s very accommodating. πŸ™‚ Here’s the result. It’s only 1:25 long and well worth watching. πŸ™‚

Produce Shopping in Sri Lanka

Produce Shopping in Sri Lanka

Here, we’ve got a few produce shops. See all the bananas hanging there? Most shops here store their bananas that way – more efficient – then will cut off a hand as a customer selects it. The bananas still on the stem is the way plantations sell their bananas to the middle men. When...

Mutant Escaping Super Bread

Mutant Escaping Super Bread

Yeah. The bread rose too much – I left it to rise overnight, and it grew about 5 or 6x in volume. Yikes! I’ve had previous experiences with this particular dough not rising much at all overnight, so I didn’t think it would be this much of a problem. But no, it did. And...

About LMAshton

Howdy and welcome to my site! I'm Laurie and I'll be your, er, hostess today. :)

I'm a Canadian expat currently living in Singapore. I'm married to a Sri Lankan and lived in Sri Lanka for nearly a decade. We also lived in New Zealand for half a year.

I cook Sri Lankan curries, sambols, and mallungs. I bake bread using wild yeast (sourdough that isn't sour). I bake on the stove. I experiment with Indian / Malaysian / Indonesian / Thai / whatever cuisines interest me. And I experiment wildly.

Life is an adventure. Join me! :)
